f someone had told Mr. Asuquo Umoh, a 65-year-old farmer from Use Abat in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, that he will be a house owner, he wouldn’t have believed it. In fact, he’ll have cursed the person for mocking him.
Because of his poor condition, Asuquo was abandoned by his relatives and friends. It was so bad that Asuquo and his family had neither good shelter nor ate good food, let alone medical care. Simply put, life was harsh and brutish for them.
For many years, they live in an open space, exposing themselves to all kinds of unhealthy weather condition and danger in the ancient community.
Fate smiled on them when last month, their condition got the attention of a prominent son of the area, Barr. Ini Ememobong and wife, Barr. Chinonyerem Ememobong, who took upon themselves as a project to change the story of Asuquo Umoh’s family.
First, the Ememobongs provided a temporary rented accommodation for the Asuquos, second, they took them for medical treatment, third, bought them clothes and food items for their upkeep and the greatest of all, a promise of a decent accommodation.
For day and night, a two-bedroom flat was under construction for the Asuquos with Barr. & Barr. (Mrs) Ememobong keeping a close watch on the project for timely delivery.
Today, one month after the foundation of the building was laid from scratch, the apartment is ready and is handed over to Mr. Asuquo Umoh and his family, who couldn’t control their emotions at the ceremony, showering blessings on the Ememobongs for putting smiles on their faces when their hope was all lost.
At the event which took place in Use Abat, Barr. Ini Ememobong, who is the Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, explained that the gesture was part of his Foundation’s efforts to help the family get a new lease of life in support of the pet project of the Governor’s wife, Dr. Martha Emmanuel who has been providing shelter for the vulnerable and the downtrodden.
