The 7th Legislative Council of Ikot Ekpene LGA have come in tune with the nascent State government Community Participation in environmental management with its proposal for the passage of a new bill.

The bill is titled: “Ikot Ekpene Local Government Environmental Sanitation, Premises Inspection, and Prohibition of Indiscriminate Dumping of Refuse and Other Environmental Health Offences.” It had stakeholders in the Environment sector and other key players deliberated on it at a Public hearing held Thursday at the Rafia City of Ikot Ekpene.

Excited by the move, Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency, Hon. Prince Ikim , commended the leadership of the Legislative Council, calling for cooperation from the members of the legislative arm to achieve success over the proposed by-laws.

“We recognise the prime roles of the legislature in law making and we respect the spirit of separation of powers as entrenched in the constitution but with mutual understanding, we can achieve a lot”, he admonished.

He said, for Akwa Ibom to sustain its level of cleanliness and local government to regain its pride in the State, efforts should be made to look inward, promulgate environmental related bye-laws which will inturn be an instrument for rural development while boosting internal revenue for the local council.

This, he said, will help in meeting with the local needs for Environmental Protection and Management.

While thanking the 7th Legislative Council for the opportunity granted him as one of the keynote speakers, the AKSEPWMA boss who is engrossed in Environmental Management, said the move was timely as it meets the state government’s resolutions to extend waste management and Environmental cleanliness to local communities

He appealed to the council to always resort to the court in the face of prosecuting offenders.

Other keynote speakers at the public hearing were: Member representing Ikot Ekpene/Obot Akara State constituency, AKHA – Rt. Hon. Idongesit Ntekpere; Executive chairman, Ikot Ekpene LGA – Hon. Unyime Etim and Vice Chairman of the Council.

Others included; Mr. Leo Leo Umana – Executive Director, Enforcement and Recovery, AKS Internal Revenue Service; Engr. Joseph Akpanebong , Director land Transport /Chief VTO Aks and all members of the 7th Legislative Council.
